Burried alive

Last december a rare beast saw daylight for the first time in 44years.
It was a 1953 15 window hardtop samba deluxe, this had been burried in a danish gravel pit back in 1967.
Some good friends of mine had heard rumors of this car and then the hunt was on. And last december the had some heavy machinery help them dig it out, and here are the remains. Despite the many years burried it isn´t to rusty, but the fact that the bus was covered with big rocks, before covered in soil, they has made some serious damage to the body.
Rumors are this might will be rebuild.

Breaking point

At our trip to the US back in the fall I stumpled over a complete rear set of 356A brakes at a very good price.
So while we drove around with them in the trunk some good friends turned up with the missing front pieces. So while they were shipped to me the rear ones came home in my luagage.

And after some work all wheel cylindres were restored and there were new lining on the brake shoes.

The front ones is allready installed on the oval and the rear ones goes on a restored gearbox that I have lying, and it will be going in the oval in a couple of years.

Webasto winddeflector

I recently found one of these Webasto winddeflectors. I had the Aeroflex one allready but I thought this was more cool, and it´s always in the car unlike the Aeroflex that you have to have inside the car when it´s not in use, or lying in the garage.
Biggest issue with the Webasto was drilling the holes in the roof, hey I did it.

If you look in the pictures you might noticed that I also added a Hella fan. This one was found with a homemade bracket so it mounts behind the rearview mirror, I guess some clever guy made it back in the days as he wasn´t happy with the suction cup mount.

Returning better than ever!

Rememeber Michael Berg´s nice 54 looker that got chrashed on the way to the SCC event in Norway 2 years ago?
It´s now returning maybe even better than it was before, I know of atleast one improvent/upgrade that has been done to this lovely car.
Watch out it will soon be at a show near you.

I just got myself this rare set of crome covers for bumber brackets.
These aren´t easy to come by, and I had my mind set on a pair of these at Camberg but they were missing the mounting brackets, lucky me a complete set just turned up and I got it :-)

Only problem now is that I need to move the swf washer bottle, otherwise the table won´t fit in there.

Yes it´s been awhile since I last posted here.
But after a trip to the US in september I concentrated on enjoying the last weeks of cruising in the oval.

Beautifull Budel

Once again we hit the road to drive the 805km to the Budel show.
This year only 3 cars as Thomas was riding with me.
Even though the weather wasn´t it´s best the party and the atmosphere was superb as always!
We had great fun with our Dutch friends, and even a couple of americans dropped by.

I didn´t buy much at the swapmeet as I had Camberg the following week end in mind.

Dyno session

This past saturday we went up north to a dyno day arranged by the MIB club.
I was pretty exited to see if the Expree motor still could perform aswell as last year,
and it sure did! It now produces 53hp and 101nm so that´s a little better than last :-)

Jens also had his bone stock motor on the dyno and it made 32hp and 85nm.
So now these 2 cars is ready to hit the autobahn to get to Bad Camberg.........

1Mai käfertreffen Hannover 2011

Once again it was timw to hit the german autobahn to get to Hannover.
But this year was diffrent as I didn´t bring the oval, instead I was riding shotgun in my friend Thomas 61 vert. And what a ride it was!
The show and swapmeet seemed even bigger and better than ever!
I did find a few parts on the swapmeet, but one of the highlights was I got a ride in Andi´s (oval56.com) 1950 Hebmüller.

Today we once again went across the country to visit one of the best swapmeets in the country.
And once again it proved to be a succes.
I got a rare armrest that mounts to the handbrake, a set vw embossed eyebrows, a Jokon accessory number plate light with integrated reserving lights and finally the missing link a SWF washer bottle.

I just bought this nos set of swedish headlight protectors.
I think they are quite funny, and maybe I will use them in this years Oldspeed Challenge? Or will the oval be in the front with no chance of flying stiones from the other racers?

I recently got this one from our friend ebay.
I haven´t mounted it like in the manual but there was a hole from the past where I put it, then there was no need for drilling a new one.

SWF dual switch

With the new rear foglight I had to think of a solution for another switch.
I had seen a pretty cool solution in a well known us 53 oval.
It looks like 2 semaphore switches sitting on the steering column, with the right one controlling the foglighs/driving lights.
This is a pretty rare accessory so I decided to make my own.
It´s now with a lighted semaphore switch on the left, and a normal semaphore switch on the right, if you move it up it turns on the front foglights and down it turns on the rear one.

Suitcases

I just bought myself another set of the original vw luggage.
I really like these in the ivory color, but I have the same problem as with my old set - the front suitcase doesn´t fit in a pre 55 car with the big gastank.
Do anybody know if there is such a suitcase made?

Now I just need to decide which set to keep.

And last night the temperature went down -10 c......
Never the less I took the oval outside today it´s almost ready for the spring now, and today lesson was diagonal tyres doesn´t have much grip in snow :-)

Rear foglight

Last year when we visited the great Budel show in Holland, was I lucky enough to find another Happich bumberguard/light bracket, and even better it was for the right rear side or left front side.
I decided to make a little safety feature for those long drives on the german autobahn at night.
It´s not always that people see those little 6volt bulbs when they are driving 200km/h +......

So this little foglight can now be turned on when I feel it´s necessary.

Safety by RIFI

Why is it when you've just decided to take a brake from buying accessories some of the things you've wanted the longest turns up?
Well this week end I visited a guy who had been collecting vw´s and parts since the early 70ies, and there were some really nice parts there!

Among others I bought this nice set of Rifi locks for the vent windows.
The idea is to replace the push putton on the vent window handle with this lock.
Then you have to loosen the little screw to use the vent window handle.
I can´t wait to get these installed :-)

I just found these 2 knock off´s/spinners, ment to be mounted on the hubcaps on the 5 lug wheels.
I´ve never seen them before therefore I clearly had to own them.I know there is another full set of these here in Denmark, but none of us know story or the manufacturer of them so if anybody knows please let me know.
Now they need a polish and a hole in the hubcaps and then they are ready for some cruising.

In the fall I bought a Blaupunkt shortwave adaptor on ebay, a couple of weeks later I found a Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio with FM on a swapmeet, so I decided to take the Phillips out of the oval (eventhough I really liked the look of it) and put in the Blaupunkt´s to get some music in the oval again.
It turned out to be quite a challenge to get the short wave adaptor hooked up to radio, but with help from john from Australia (in2vws) and a local electronic enthusiast it was made possible.
Now it´s all mounted in the dash just waiting for a speaker or 2 on the bambus shelf.

GHE day/night mirror

Just before christmas I a got an email from a good friend in the Netherlands.
He knew that I´m an addict for accessories, and he also knew that I was on the hunt for a GHE day/night rearview mirror since I couldn´t use my flip over screen for the original mirror anymore after putting in the mirror clock (It´s some big problems I know :-) )
So I was pretty happy that he had me in mind when he was lucky enough to find one of these and even offer me one of them, I guess I owe him a glass of Jack Daniels and coke at this years Budel.

Swapmeets

It´s been a while since I last posted but I´ve just been bussy doing other things.
Since last I have been at 3 swapmeets, unfortunately there were no major scores but I did manage to find some small parts.
A working Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio that properly will get in the oval with an extra Blaupunkt gadget, a nice Hella lighted semaphore switch, and properly the rarest part a Hella hood handle double foglight.
It´s really an ugly foglight, but I think it´s so ugly that´s it´s a little bit cool :-)
And we need some light to get the true rally feeling for next years cannonball run...........

Many years ago when I put the Motometer rally gauge set in the oval, I thought crome is cool :-)
But lately I´ve wanted to change it back to to the ivory color it had originaly.
Lucky for me Jens said yes to do the painting for me.

Last week end I hit swapmeets in the same day but didn´t stroke gold........
It helped thouhg that I recently made a swap for some nos panels that wasn´t correct for the oval, for the 2 beauties you see on the picture.
A nos right side door correct for zwitter and early oval, and the same goes for the right side quarter panel. That was sure one good deal/day!

A couple of weeks ago a local vw enthusiat lieving only 20km from me listed some parts on our danish vw forum.
He had been lucky enough to buy alot of NOS parts, and what was even better he was willing to sell some of the parts he didn´t need himself.
Needless to say Jens and I was there to pick up some goodies.
It was most mechanicel parts that you will be worn out at some point.
They are all lying on the shelf now ready if the oval should get in trouble.

Fuel lever extension

I was on the hunt for this rare fuel lever extension quite some time, they are not easy to find! And be aware there are reproes out there!
When I got it, it was in a pretty sad shape, but after a trip to the cromers and some polishing I think it´s really nice.
With this one you have to take the normal fuel tap of on the fuel reserve valve, and then mount the extension on the valve.

And really love the "made in germany" and the volkswagen logo on the bracket.

This past week end I took part in 2 vintage shows.
One of them had everything from old motorcycles to old airplanes at the show ground.
And the airplanes were flying over our cars showing their skills.
I really like taking part in these vintage shows were everyone is welcome, it´s great fun to see something diffrent than only volkswagens all the time.

Yes I know it has been a while since my last update but I have been real bussy with shows, swapmeets, moving my girlfriends things to our house and in middle of it all I hit a deer with my dayli driver so it was totaled and I had to find a new dayli.
But now it should all be back on track :-)

It has been a while since my last post, but I have just been busy lately with some swapmeets, and alot of wrenching my own and friends cars.
That doesn´t mean that I haven´t had the time to think about accessories :-)
I have lately sold some of the parts that I knew never was going on the oval anyway,
and why is that? To get one of my dream accessories!
So yesterday me and my girlfriend drove across Denmark to pick up my very own Kienzle mirror clock!
It´s dated 8/53 so it should be one of the first (not sure when they exactly started making them) It´s in very good condition and is working very well, it was winded up yesterday and is still ticking :-)

So here is some pictures of it mounted in the oval where it belongs!

Last saturday, well you properly allready guessed it I went to yet another danish swapmeet. This time it was a danish vw entusiast that were selling some of his parts.
Even that he didn´t have accessories on offer, I still walked away with a nice parts, among others I got 3 heart tail lights, not In a great shape but agreat price and with some parts that I needed.

This past week end I attacked yeat another danish swapmeet.
This was a very little swapmeet, and have only beenthere once before, but it was better that expected so I didn´t walk awaay empty handed.
I got a complete left side oval tail light, 1 Hella fog light for the Hella bumberguard/fog light combo, a Osram spare bulb box and 2 very cool accessory brochures. One from 1961 covering GHE products, and one from a danish dealer showing both Petri horn rings and mirror clocks, damn there some good reading in those, and some great prices too!

Holbaek swapmeet

Today we went across the country to get one of my favorite danish swapmeets of the year, and once again we wnt home with some goodies.
Jens got a rot free original oval era right side front fender, but it has some dents we have sort out. He also got some 30hp gasket sets and a cigaret lighter for the dashboard.
I got some heater pipes to connect between the heaterboxes and the body, a nos vw logo for the hood, another cigaret lighter, a speedwell oil pressure gauge, a spare glass for my Hella foglights, and a mid 50ies german booklet showing to build up your vw dealership, it contains some really nice pictures of splits, ovals, barndoors, and even some early Porsche 356.

The accessory department

Since the las update on Jens´ oval, the guy has gone overboard in adding accessories to his nice oval.
Here is pictures of just some of them.
First is a nos Gradulux rear window venetian blind.
Next a crome "Troja" country badge for Denmark.
And on the quater panels he has added af set of 3 crome beauty rings, also made by "Troja". And if you look closely on that last picture you can see his nos crome hinge covers.

Dyno run

Today I got the oval on the dyno to test the modificafions on the motor.
The bigger venturies turned out to be too big to handle, so the stock ones were put back in.
And after some small adjustments on the ignition it achieved 51hp, and we were done.
It runs really well now!

Easter guests

Easter wasn´t much vacation for me, but I had fun anyway.
First my friend Christian dropped off his 64 ragtop for some small jobs among others I should make him a "Abarth" exhaust.
It was the first one I have done for a car with cut outs in the rear valance, but if I should say so myself it turned out pretty good.
Next in line was my friend Ken´s 51 split -I had put a 3 fold ragtop in.
And between those projects I managed to work a little on the Express motor, and do some adjustments to Jens' oval too, but more about that later.

What´s the temperature?

I recently made a trade that got me this rare wirbulator made by Milbar.
It´s not only a bug deflector, it´s also has thermometer in the midle so that you can see what the temperature is outside while you are driving.
I´ve wanted one these since I first saw one at a show in Belgium back in 1997, so I´m pretty pleased that I finnaly got it!
By the way if you look closely at the pictures, you can see it´s still pretty cold here in Demark

Herning swapmeet

Yes it was time for yet another swapmeet.
Jens and hit the trade stands at 6.30 am and we made some pretty good deals.
Jens got a Motometer gauge holder and a Helphos light.
I got a Blaupunkt radio for a oval, split horn grill, suction cup ashtray and a early oval gas tank with the correct sender for the Motometer rally gauge set.
Nothing beats a good swapmeet hunt :-)

My friend Christian recently scored this nice set of original vw suitcases for his 64 ragtop.
Even though Christian doesn´t have that true bluehat feel (notice the Fuchs sparewheel) he is definitely one of the good guys, and a sucker for accessories.
Doesn´t it just look perfect with those suitcases behind the rear seat?!

Fredericia swapmeet

Last saturday Jens and I was at the Fredericia swapmeet.
There is not much to found on the danish swapmeets anymore, but we didn´t walk away completely empty handed though.
Jens got a original cruiser pedal, I found a WEGU flower vase, a lighted rearview mirror and a complete year of 1959 Gute Fahrt magazines.

New venturies

I just recieved the new venturies for the Express motor with the post the other day.
My friend Andi from DBK Germany was kind enough to machine a stock set of 21,5mm venturies to 23,5mm for me.
The motor has been started but not driven yet because there is still alot of snow and salt on the roads.
And I have made an appointment with the dyno guy in next month, I can´t wait to see how it performes.

Yesterday when I came home from work there were a package lying on my doorstep. It contained 3 issues of the latest Let´s Play VW´s magazine where there is a big article about Hessisch Oldendorf last year, and even a feature of my oval :-)

Breather baffle

Have you ever had the problem when running your 25 or 30hp motor long time at high rpm´s, that there would come some oil out between the generator and the generator stand?
This little piece of metal should help solve the problem.
You can buy these at Wolfburg West. I recently bought one,and it´s now installed in generator exactly as it should.
Now we only have to wait and see what happends when we can hit the roads again, right now there is about 20cm of snow outside the JDVD garage, so I guess it will be a while before I can test it.

Head job

This week I got my heads from the machine shop.
They got new valve guides, new seats, and I had bought 8 nos valves for them, but after some persuasion from my good friends Andi from Germany (oval56.com) and Ulrik from the JDVD garage, there were a change of plans on the inlet valves.
The heads got a set of 33mm Okrasa inlet valves instead of the 30mm nos ones I allready had bought. The exhaust remanined stock.

Also this week I got my linkage back from my Friend Bo, he made some small bushing for the linkage so that the axle won´t run against metal.

I can´t wait to try this modifications out.

Nos hub caps

They needed a croming though.
I decided to do the grinding/polishing work myself to save some money, and Jens was kind enough to help me.

I have run with my Hella foglight/bumberguard combo for 4-5 years and I´m real happy with them!
Only thing, when I got them they were in poor condition, heavily pitted.
The good/bad news is that they are made of alumunium, that ment that my chrome guy said he was´nt able to recrome them, but instead I polished them, which I have several times each year since.
But just before christmas I got a email from a friend in Sweden.
Who had found a nos set of Hella guards that he didn´t need, I jumped on the deal right away! And yesterday it was time to mount them to the oval.
I must admit it didn´t hurt that they were put on, it looks even better now! And the nuts on the bolts were still 14 how cool is that?!

Some of you might remember, I gave myself a set of Foxcraft fenderskirts as a birthday present last year. Now I have done it again.....
This time I gave myself a long wanted christmas present!
A 60mm Motometer amp gauge for my Motometer rally set. I had the clock in it for years, as a matter of fact the clock and the senders were things that were missing when I found the panel, but I was lucky enough to find a clock at VW Euro in the Netherlands back in 1999. But now it was time for a change.

I´ve wanted the amp gauge for a long time, but none of these seems to be offered for sale, and the guys who has them won't sell, but finally one guy gave in and agreed on selling me one (he had 2 of them, lucky bastard)
Funny thing is back in June at the OCTO show in California, I held this very same gauge in my hand and talked to the seller, but at that point it wasn´t for sale.
I think the amp gauge looks more cool in the panel, and it´s way more rare!
And another great thing is now I have an excuse to go look for a clock....... :-)

Back up your light

This summer I bought a rare Happich bumberguard, made so you could mount an extra light in it. It was in bad shape when I bought it! The seller said it was mounted on a 51 split that he found 20 years ago, sitting in a chicken farm for decades.
Well since I never had seen this one before I bought it anyway. And after some welding, and a trip to the chromer it was decent enougth to get on the oval, and since I all ready had the Hella bumberguard/foglights in the front I decided to put it on the back with my Hella back up light.
If you ask me, I think it turned out pretty cool.

Winter boredom

These winter months can be pretty long when all you dream of is hitting the road in the oval. So what else to do than get weird ideas on begalf of the oval?
Latest thing was that suddenly thought the Wegu/chevron mudflaps was much cooler than the vw logoéd ones I had on.
I found a nos set and put them on, but now I´m not so sure what to think of them.

Radio madness

Last tuesday my friend Kurt and I went across the country ( not that it´s so long a distance)
Kurt was on the hunt for a radio for his 51 split.
We had an appointment with the seller, that he should look on a nice and complete Telefunken, but as we arrived it turned out that he had another split radio.
And Kurt simply couldn´t resist the urge to buy the also complete, and more desireable Becker Monza radio instead.

DKP cruise night

At our vacation to the states this past summer there were of course some vw´s involved! One of the highlights were just around the corner from Lenny Coops shop, where we attended the open house the friday before the Classic, - I´m referring to the famous DKP cruise night at Nick´s Burger´s.
I have never seen so many top class cars in such a little space!
The cars, the people and the atmosphere were just incredible!
If you ever get the chance, go there!

Express progress part???

Well since the oval is parked for the winther, and there is nothing but rain outside you could just aswell spend some time at the John Doe garage prepping up the oval for the next season.
I had small problems with express motor, every time I adjusted the valves some of them needed to be loosened a little. I took the motor out and the heads of for inspection, it looks like some of the valve seats are moving down in the heads, so now they are send of to a machine shop with 8 nos valves and valve guides, and then he puts in new seat also.
Further more it gets a set of total seal piston rings, and a solid rocker shaft kit from OMT in california. The rocker arms is modified to accept swiwel/elephant adjuster screws, that also meant that the pushrods needed to be 2mm shortened to get back to the original geometry. And by the way that is no easy task when lifter and pushrod is the same unit, as it is on these old 30hp motors, but again OMT did a good job.
Now I just have to wait for the heads, so it all can go back together.

Sechs Volt spy.....

This suspicious character was caught sneaking around in my neighborhood last saturday.
He looks a lot like Oval57 from the Norwegian Sechs Volt Garage, but what was he doing down here? And why does he look so happy? Could it have something do with the parts he is putting in the trunk of his car? It looks a lot like a Hazet Assistent tool trolley, this clearly needs to be investigated.

Turbo on the rings of beauty

I´ve been on the hunt for a set of 15 inch turbo beauty rings, since I fell in love with them while checking out Eric Jones´beautiful 56 vert at The Classic this year.
But these aren´t easy to come by! And it doesn´t make it any easier that each set includes 2 lefts and 2 rights, so that the pattern in the rings moves the same way on each side, clever huah? :-)
But would you believe my luck? In less than one week I was so lucky that I found 3 sets! And all of them with 2 lefts and 2 rights. And they were all priced fair. But after I got them all I found out that each set was a little different than the other, hmm so no spares if I should loose one.....
I have now mounted the set I liked the best on the oval (why is it winter so I can´t go cruising with them?) and sold one set to Jens.
And the last set I´m really not sure what to do with, I think they are cool, and one nice feature is that they are stamped with "made in germany and a vw logo" but I can´t run with 2 sets can I?

I recently made a deal were I got these 2 nos ribbed doors in trade for some work.
They are ment for the oval, when the time comes to redo it.

Nothing beats these nos parts, they are simply beatyfull!

Yet another danish swapmeet was held this past week end.
Luise, Jens and I went from my house at 7.30am to be sure to hit it when the gates opened. Normally there isn´t much to be found on these swapmeets anymore, you just go anyway with the hope of finding the old Hebmüller decklid standing in a corner for 10euro........

Never the less I got myself some pretty good deals.
One original undented hub cap, a early round 30hp regulator and split 25hp D regulator, a 52mm Motometer steering mount gauge holder, 2 black 1 red all nos foglight protectors ( I´ve wanted something to protect my Hella foglights on the long trips for a while)
And what I consider the best buy of the day, a "Auerhahn" Wirbulator, that appears to be nos, even though it wasn´t in the box.

New options

It has have been awfull quiet here for while, but it doesn´t mean nothing have happend.
Some new options have been added to my oval.
First I found a radio that I've only seen twice before, It´s a 1953 Philips radio. I really like this plain look with only 2 buttons and the big scale with all the german cities written on it, and that the colour of scale house matches the original buttons on the dash, but enough of the radio oh did I forget to mention I even found another so that I now have two of them? :-)
Another thing that i found on thesamba one late night was the original Motometer fuel sender for rally package, I´ve been running a VDO unit for several years, and I know most people wont notice, but I know I will sleep better at night knowing that I now have all the correct senders on this set.
If anyone out there knows how to restore such a sender drop me a email, as this one unfurnatly no longer is precisely as it used to be.
The last thing I bought when we were in Norway at the SCC: some yellow 6volt bulbs for my headlights, it sure took the last breath of light out of my headlights, but I think it looks cool as F....
